Plagiarism Controversy: Chandan Shetty's "Cotton Candy" Accused of Lifting from "Y Bull Party"

3 months ago | 5 Views

Chandan Shetty, the Kannada rapper and composer, is facing some drama over his new track Cotton Candy. Yuvraj YBull is claiming that Chandan lifted parts from his 2018 party anthem Y Bull and is considering taking legal action for copyright infringement. Chandan, however, is denying these allegations.

Chandan Shetty denies plagiarism allegations about Cotton Candy

Chandan, a musician with more than 80 crore views on his tracks, shared, "I always try to avoid copying or even drawing inspiration from other songs because I know that's not right. I had no idea about the song Y Bull; if I had, I definitely wouldn't have used a similar melody for Cotton Candy. Any resemblance between the two is just a coincidence." He also mentioned that he's prepared to take legal action against the allegations.

Chandan went on to say that there's a folk song with a similar melody that might have influenced him subconsciously while he was working on Cotton Candy. He pointed out that it's pretty common for composers to have similar ideas, but he doubts anyone would intentionally choose a 'failed' tune to make it their own.

He shared an example from his own work, mentioning a song called Ice Candy from a movie named Digbayam that he wrote five years ago. “If you listen to Ice Candy and then check out Oo Antava Mawa from Pushpa by Devi Sri Prasad, you might notice some similarities. But that doesn’t mean Devi Sri Prasad was trying to copy my song. My track didn’t do well back then. No sensible composer would want to mess with a flop tune,” he clarified.

The rapper's closing statement on the matter is that he's ready to take on the allegation in court and is optimistic about a favorable result. “Ed Sheeran faced similar claims about copying Marvin Gaye’s Let’s Get It On for his track Thinking Out Loud, but he came out on top in the copyright battle. I have faith in our legal system,” he wraps up.
