6 days ago | 5 Views
Phule is a biographical film that highlights the lives and social reform efforts of Mahatma Jyotirao Phule and Savitribai Phule. The film features Pratik Gandhi in the role of Jyotirao and Patralekhaa as Savitribai. Although it was scheduled for release today, April 11, the film encountered controversy when members of the Brahmin community raised concerns about their portrayal. As a result, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has requested the filmmakers to eliminate references to caste and implement various other modifications.
Phule to go through dialogue changes and more
The release date of the film has been delayed due to a request from the CBFC for the producers to eliminate a voiceover that alludes to the caste system. Additionally, the film will exclude terms like ‘Mahar’, ‘Mang’, ‘Peshwai’, and ‘Manu’s system of caste.’
The film has also altered several lines of dialogue, including:
The phrase "Jaha kshudro ko... jhadu bandhkar chalna chahiye" has been revised to "Kya yahi hamari... sabse doori banake rakhani chahiye." Additionally, the line "3000 saal purani....gulami" has been modified to "Kai saal purani," and a 43-second segment featuring "Yaha 3 M hai...Aur hum vahi karne ja rahe hai" has also been changed.
Director Ananth Mahadevan on Phule release delay
According to a report from Mid-Day, he addressed the postponement, indicating that misunderstandings arose following the trailer's release.
"I met with representatives from the Akhil Bhartiya Brahmin Samaj and explained how we depicted certain Brahmins assisting Jyotiba Phule in establishing 20 schools, which pleased them. These Brahmins were instrumental when Phule founded the Satyashodhak Samaj. As a devoted Brahmin myself, I have no intention of disparaging my community. We are merely presenting the facts. This is not a film driven by an agenda," he stated.
