Pepe’s Vinay Rajkumar on what draws him to the characters he plays

Vinay Rajkumar’s filmography has always been about quality over quantity and in doing so, he has also strived to bring in as much variety as is possible. The romantic comedies he’s done have been vastly different from each other; he’s tried his hand at a gritty sports drama and is all set for the release of his most massy film to date, Pepe. An action thriller, Pepe, says Vinay, is not the stuff of typical commercial movies.
While Vinay has been vocal about his desire to establish himself as an actor and not a star, he reckons that stardom will come to him as a byproduct of his work as an actor being recognized. As such, one does wonder what draws him to the characters he’s chosen to do till date, right from Siddhartha, Run Antony, Ananthu vs Nushrath, 10, Ondu Sarala Prema Kathe, and now, Pepe.
Vinay Rajkumar on common factor of his roles
In a conversation with his cousin Dhanya Ramkumar, Vinay spoke about his script/role selection. “Every character I have done has been different in terms of looks, how they convey their emotions, etc. If Ondu Sarala Prema Kathe’s Athishay was happy-go-lucky, Pepe’s base emotion is anger, and yet, he is calm. Looking back at my filmography, though, I realized that there is something common about all of them. All of them have good intentions, which is probably I could connect to them,” he says.
The actor adds that his roles either let him represent a side of himself onscreen or be someone that he can never be. “Either you connect to certain qualities, or you present something that you can’t be through that character,” he explains.
Vinay, who began the year with Ondu Sarala Prema Kathe, is looking at ending it with possibly a third release as well. Following Pepe on August 30, the actor says that his film Andondittu Kaala is targeting a November theatrical release.
