Malayalam cinema is gradually transitioning into an experimental phase. Following Arun Chandu's science fiction mockumentary, Gaganachari, released in 2024, the industry is now venturing into the realm of zombies with the film Jambi. Directed by George Kora, this Malayalam zombie movie will also star Pearle Maaney.

Weekend Blockbusters, recognized for producing successful films such as Bangalore Days, Minnal Murali, and RDX, have unveiled their upcoming project titled Jambi. The film will be directed by actor George Kora, with a screenplay crafted by Nandhu Manoj, Harikrishnan KR, and George Kora.

To announce this new zombie film, the production team released an electrifying motion poster featuring a Velichappadu (oracle) amidst a crowd, accompanied by a traditional folk song and an energetic background score. The film is scheduled for release in 2026.

In their social media announcement, the creators stated, “In a world where the past refuses to rest, the Z̶o̶m̶b̶i̶e̶ ̶…JAMBI will rise.”

A well-known YouTuber, Pearle Maaney, has also ventured into acting in films. In a recent post on her social media account, she announced that both she and her husband, Srinish, will be featured in the upcoming Malayalam zombie film, Jambi. The film is directed by George Kora, who is recognized for his works including Tholvi FC and Thirike.

Weekend Blockbusters’ films

Jambi is being produced by Sophia Paul, under the Weekend Blockbusters label.

Previously, Weekend Blockbusters produced the superhero film Minnal Murali, featuring Tovino Thomas in the leading role. Directed by Basil Joseph, the 2021 film tells the story of a tailor named Jaison who acquires superpowers after being struck by lightning, only to confront a powerful adversary within his own village. This acclaimed film is currently available for streaming on Netflix.

Weekend Blockbusters has also revealed another film titled Detective Ujjwalan, featuring Dhyan Sreenivasan in the leading role. The filming for this movie concluded earlier this week; however, a release date has not yet been disclosed. This will mark their first theatrical release following the Shane Nigam-led RDX, which premiered in theatres during the Onam festival in 2023.
