After the historic Cannes victory earlier this year, Payal Kapadia's film, All We Imagine As Light, continues to win accolades and awards from across the world. This time, the Hindi-Malayalam film impressed the jury at the Gotham Awards 2024, securing the Best International Feature award. The award function was held in New York City on Monday night.

Gotham Awards: All We Imagine As Light wins

The film, featuring Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, and Chhaya Kadam in prominent roles, was adjudged the winner in the Best International Feature category at the Gotham Awards. The other films in the category that were vying for the awards were Green Border, Hard Truths, Inside The Yellow Cocoon Shell, and Vermiglio.

After receiving the award on Monday night, an elated Payal Kapadia said, "It’s our first fiction narrative feature film, so it is super nice to get this."

Payal Kapadia also secured a nomination in the best director category, but RaMell Ross of Nickel Boys took home the honours

All We Imagine As Light won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival in May this year. It also bagged the Jury Grand Prize at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards 2024 on Sunday, right before the Gotham Awards.

All We Imagine As Light plot

All We Imagine As Light tale of narrates the tale of two Malayali nurses, who are roommates as they navigate their lives in Mumbai. Kani Kusruti plays the role of Prabha, whose husband is in Germany; while Divya Prabha portrays the young Anu who is in a relationship with Shiaz. The film also features Chhaya Kadam, Hridhu Haroon and Azees Nedumangad.

Payal Kapadia's All We Imagine As Light

An FTII graduate, Payal Kapadia had earlier made documentaries and short films. She made her feature directorial debut with All We Imagine as Light, which was hailed by critics from across the world.

The film became the first Indian movie in 30 years to compete for the Palme d’Or at Cannes, scripting history, and went on to win the Grand Prix.

Despite international acclaim, the film was not selected as India's official entry to the Oscars. Laapataa Ladies, directed by Kiran Rao, was chosen instead.
