After 18 years in the film industry, Parvathy Thiruvothu has assembled an enviable filmography to her credit, much of which has come to her in Malayalam. And while she dabbles with Tamil and Hindi also occasionally, the one industry she tested and then left without a trace is Kannada cinema. Between 2007 and 2013, Parvathy was a part of 4 Kannada films, debuting with the late Puneeth Rajkumar’s Milana, which she followed up with Male Barali Manju Irali, Prithvi (also with Puneeth) and Andar Bahar with Century Star Shivarajkumar.

Parvathy Thiruvothu isn't really into playing just romantic roles

In a recent chat with Filmfare, Parvathy opened up about her decision to step away from Kannada films. She made her debut in Sandalwood early in her career, during a phase when her roles revolved around love—whether it was falling in love, dealing with heartbreak, longing for love, or pursuing it.

She mentioned that in "Milana," her character was forced into marriage, with her husband even helping her reconnect with her boyfriend. It didn’t take long for her to notice that the acting style in Kannada cinema was quite different, leaning towards a more exaggerated performance. Parvathy recalled being surprised when she was asked to amp up her expressions by 5%, which was a stark contrast to the subtlety she was used to in Kerala.

What really bothered her was that the roles she was offered only required her to smile, look attractive, fall in love, or feel like something was missing without a partner. There was nothing more to it, so she eventually decided to stop making Kannada films. She had done four Kannada movies, and they were all centered around love. That’s when it hit her that if she wanted to explore something different, she needed to stick with Malayalam cinema.
