Filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali's 2018 monumental film Padmaavat is poised for a theatrical re-release in celebration of its seventh anniversary. The announcement was made by the producers via Instagram on Wednesday.

The film stars Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor in lead roles. Viacom 18 Studios shared a poster of the trio. The film will hit the theatres on January 24. It captioned the post, “Witness the epic tale on the big screen again. #Padmaavat in cinemas on 24th January.”

More about the Padmaavat controversy in 2017-18

The film, inspired by the work of Sufi poet Malik Muhammad Jayasi titled Padmavat, ignited significant controversy upon its release, particularly among various Rajput organizations who were offended by the depiction of Queen Padmavati. In 2017, director Sanjay Leela Bhansali faced physical assault from members of the Karni Sena during a protest at Jaigarh Fort in Jaipur, where filming was taking place.

In response to the unrest, Bhansali relocated the production to Kolhapur, Maharashtra; however, the sets were subsequently attacked by individuals wielding petrol bombs and swords. The Karni Sena subsequently called for a ban on the film, arguing that it misrepresents historical events and portrays Rajputs unfavourably.

The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), in conjunction with two historians, recommended five alterations to the film, including a change of title. The film was initially renamed Padmavat and later changed to Padmaavat. It ultimately premiered on January 25, 2018, and according to Sacnilk.com, it grossed ₹400 crore in India.
