Years after his demise, the charm of Uttam Kumar is still intact among the Bengali film audience. Banking on this unending love for Mahanayak, Srijit Mukherji made Oti Uttam which was released earlier this year. The film did well at the box office. The film features Uttam Kumar’s grandson Gourab Chatterjee, Anindya Sengupta, Roshni Bhattacharya, Laboni Sarkar, and Subhasish Mukherjee. Now the film is out on OTT. 

Oti Uttam delves into the love life of a PhD scholar and Uttam Kumar enthusiast young man Krishnendu, played by Anindya, and his love interest, played by Roshni. After being rejected by the girl of his choice, Krishnendu resorts to planchette with the help of his friend (Gourab) to bring the spirit of Uttam Kumar to help him. Srijit and his team extracted and stitched different clips from Uttam Kumar’s films and finally made the film. 

The film was dropped in March this year. Earlier this year, there was a screening of this film in Mumbai where Tanuja – who worked with Uttam Kumar – watched it. She reportedly went emotional while watching it. Finally, the film is now available online. Oti Uttam is being streamed on the new OTT platform Fridaay.

The film got into a legal tiff with another production house, Alaknanda Arts – makers of Achena Uttam. The house alleged that the rights of Uttam Kumar’s biopic were with them and Mahanayak’s family disregarded the contract when Srijit released the poster. Uttam Kumar’s family, Srijit, and the production house Camelia were served notice. Finally, it was released in theatres and now, online.
