Kunchacko Boban's recent police thriller, Officer On Duty, is poised to become the highest-grossing Malayalam film of February 2025, as evidenced by a notable increase in its box office earnings on the second day of release.

Preliminary figures from the industry tracking platform Sacnilk indicate that the film, directed by Jithu Ashraf, generated Rs 1.75 Cr in domestic gross, exceeding its opening day revenue of Rs 1.29 Cr. The film's worldwide earnings, bolstered by the addition of over 100 extra screenings since its debut on February 10, have already surpassed Rs 5 Cr. With the weekend approaching, the film is anticipated to achieve even greater financial success, particularly as its only rival, Get-Set Baby, has received mixed reviews.

Officer On Duty beats Marco star’s Get-Set Baby at the box office

Officer On Duty, an intense action-thriller that received favourable reviews upon its release, faced minimal competition from Unni's Get-Set Baby, a feel-good family drama. However, the latter garnered mixed responses and was released in limited theatres due to the crowded lineup of Valentine's Day films from the previous week, resulting in a mere collection of Rs 0.29 Cr, as reported by Sacnilk.

The film featuring Kunchacko, written by Shahi Kabir, known for his work on Nayattu and Joseph, tells the story of a demoted police officer grappling with personal trauma. He is compelled to take on an investigation that begins with a counterfeit gold chain and escalates into a case involving a gang of drug dealers targeting teenage girls for revenge.

Officer On Duty’s OTT partner

The film is among the select Malayalam movies that have successfully sold their OTT rights before its release. Netflix has acquired the streaming rights for Officer On Duty, which is anticipated to debut next month.

Additionally, the film is poised to become the second major success for the industry this year, following Asif Ali's Rekhachithram, which generated significant profits for its producers earlier in the year.
