In 2023, Indrasis Acharya’s Niharika was released after its festival round. The film which features Silajit Majumder, Anuradha Mukherjee, Anindya Sengupta, Mallika Maxzumder, and others received critical acclaim after its release. The film is now available for streaming online. Here is what we know.  

According to Indrasis, the film was praised in eight festivals. It tells the story of the relationship between a young woman and her maternal uncle. The film is now streaming on Amazon Prime. It started its journey after being world premiered at the Adelaide Film festival on October 22. 

Niharika won many accolades around the world including Hanoi International, International Film Festival of Kerala, Pune International, Varna International Film Festival, Melbourne Indian Festival, Habitat, and many more. It was judged the Best Bengali Film (critics) and Best Playback (female) of 2023 in an award show. 

The film is shot in remote areas in Madhupur, Simultala, and Giridih for one year to capture three seasons – summer, monsoon, and winter. Niharika is a crowdfunded project in which about 15 co-producers chipped in to finish the project. Indrasis explained that since independent films are not made keeping commercial success in mind, it becomes difficult to gather funds. “When we started shooting the film, only one producer, Pastel Entertainment, financed the first bit. It was only after the first phase of shooting, that we showed our work to other producers, and they came forward. I believe that it is important to have a space for creative independence,” Indrasis explained.
