The Na'vi have been depicted as the heroes in James Cameron's Avatar series thus far. In the initial two films, they faced off against human 'colonizers' who served as the antagonists. However, the upcoming third installment, Avatar: Fire and Ash, is poised to alter this dynamic.

James Cameron has disclosed the antagonists of Avatar 3. The forthcoming chapter in the Avatar franchise will present a new challenge for the Sully family on Pandora, as announced by director James Cameron during the unveiling of the film's first footage by Walt Disney on Thursday.

Avatar: Fire and Ash is set to premiere in theaters this December, continuing the narrative of the blue-skinned Na'vi. Sam Worthington reprises his role as Jake Sully, while Zoe Saldana returns as his wife, Neytiri.

Cameron addressed attendees via video at the CinemaCon convention for theater owners in Las Vegas, stating that the Sully family "will truly be put through the ringer" in this new film. He shared this from New Zealand, where he is finalizing the project.

"They will confront not only the human invaders but also new foes—the Ash people," he explained. "I’m sending you a reel to provide a glimpse of the spectacle, along with the heightened emotional depth," Cameron added.

Can Avatar: Fire and Ash rejuvenate Hollywood? Cinema operators are keen to showcase the next Avatar film. The original installment remains the highest-grossing film of all time, while the sequel ranks third, with Avengers: Endgame in between.

This year, overall ticket sales in the United States and Canada are currently 11% lower than last year. "I hope this film can give theater owners a much-needed boost," Cameron remarked. "We are still recovering from the dual challenges posed by the pandemic and the rise of streaming."

Saldana attended CinemaCon in person and mentioned that the film will also introduce the wind traders, "a peaceful, nomadic air-traveling clan." The cast includes Stephen Lang, Sigourney Weaver, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Giovanni Ribisi, Dileep Rao, Matt Gerald, Kate Winslet, David Thewlis and Oona Chaplin. Avatar: Fire and Ash is scheduled for a global release on December 19.
