1 month ago | 5 Views
A fresh true crime docuseries is hitting Netflix on March 31, 2025, and it dives into a major breakthrough in the infamous Long Island Serial Killer case. This killer has haunted a small New York beach town for nearly twenty years, with connections to the deaths of at least eleven women.
Who exactly is the Long Island Serial Killer?
The documentary dives into the chilling murders that came to light when the bodies of young women were found along a stretch of Ocean Parkway in Long Island. The identified victims were sex workers from New York City, with some having been missing for almost a decade.
It became clear that a serial killer was targeting this specific group, but the investigation hit a wall for over 13 years. Then, in 2023, there was a major development when a man believed to be the "Long Island Serial Killer" was taken into custody.
This case, often referred to as the Gilgo Beach murders, gained notoriety after the disappearance of Shannan Gilbert, who was also an escort like many of the other victims. Her case triggered a search that uncovered several bodies. In December 2010, four victims were found at Gilgo Beach, all within a quarter-mile of each other.
Then, in March and April of 2011, six more sets of remains were located in Nassau and Suffolk counties in New York. Later that same year, about nine miles away from the other discoveries, Shannan Gilbert's remains were found during an excavation.
After getting lost in a swampy area, officials concluded that she likely died from either exposure or accidental drowning. Netflix had previously released a film called Lost Girls in 2020, which tells the story of a mother searching for justice for her daughter, one of the victims of the Long Island Serial Killer. Even with renewed interest from the public, the case went unsolved for almost ten years.
In 2023, a major breakthrough happened when 59-year-old architect Rex Andrew Heuermann from Nassau County was arrested. By 2024, he was facing three counts of first-degree murder, three counts of second-degree murder, and another homicide charge. Heuermann pleaded not guilty to all of these charges.
A new three-part documentary series titled The Long Island Serial Killer is set to premiere on March 31. It dives into the extensive investigation that finally led to an arrest and addresses the stigma associated with the victims' line of work. Directed by Liz Garbus, who also directed Lost Girls, the series includes interviews with journalists, law enforcement, and the friends and family of both the accused and the victims.
