Duniya Vijay made significant strides in Telugu cinema in 2023 when he was cast as the antagonist in Nandamuri Balakrishna’s Veera Simha Reddy. The actor and filmmaker, whose film Bheema ended the box office slump in Sandalwood in 2024, is currently engaged in his next directorial project, City Lights, which features his daughter Monisha alongside Vinay Rajkumar in the lead role. He is now set to add another achievement to his impressive career.
Vijay is poised to make his debut in Kollywood, having been selected to join the cast of Sundar C’s Mookuthi Amman 2, which stars Nayanthara in the titular role. The film's muhurtha was conducted in Chennai on March 6, during which Vijay's casting was revealed, alongside that of Regina Cassandra, Yogi Babu, Abhinaya, Ineya, Garuda Raam, Singampuli, Vichu Vishwanath, Ajay Ghosh, and Myna Nandhini, among others. Vijay took to social media to announce his entry into Kollywood and expressed his gratitude to Sundar C for the opportunity.
Nayanthara will once again portray her character from the original film; however, this time she and her husband, Vignesh Shivan, will take on the roles of co-producers alongside Sundar C and Khushbu. The music for the film is composed by Hip Hop Tamizha Adhi, while Gopi Amarnath will handle the cinematography. The fantasy comedy Mookuthi Amman, which premiered in 2020, was released directly on an OTT platform. Aside from Nayanthara, none of the other cast members from the original film will be returning.
In addition to his directorial work on City Lights, Vijay is currently engaged in the production of Landlord, collaborating with Jadeshaa K Hampi, the director of Gentleman and Guru Shishyaru, as well as the writer of Kaatera. The film features Raj B Shetty in the role of the antagonist and is set in the 1990s, similarly addressing themes of land and survival as seen in Kaatera. Filming took place on specially constructed sets designed to replicate a village from the 90s, with a scheduled release in 2025. Notably, Vijay's daughter, Monica, will make her film debut in Landlord, portraying his character's daughter.
