The movie Mrs. has been making the rounds at various film festivals and is finally ready to hit the screens in India. After a two-year wait, it’s directed by Aarti Kadav and stars Sanya Malhotra in the lead. It will be available for streaming on ZEE5 (OTTPlay Premium), but the release date is still under wraps. The cast also includes Kanwaljit Singh and Nishant Dahiya in key roles. 

Here's a summary of the plot

The movie centers around a married woman who has a dance background and is trying to find her footing as a wife while staying authentic to herself and dealing with the pressures of societal norms. Diwakar, a wealthy doctor, marries Richa, a dancer and dance teacher. But after the wedding, she faces the challenge of fitting into the conventional expectations of a wife. This thought-provoking drama, Mrs., features Malhotra and showcases a housewife navigating the complexities of contemporary life while upholding traditional values.

Film festival awards and accolades

Malhotra snagged the 'Best Actress' award at the 2024 New York Indian Film Festival for her role in the film, which is an official adaptation of the original Malayalam drama, The Great Indian Kitchen (2021).

The film has made its rounds at various international film festivals, kicking off with its premiere at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival in 2023. The teaser dropped in November 2023. Arati Kadav's film wrapped up the New York Indian Film Festival in 2024 and even got a nod for Best Director. It had its Asia premiere on November 22, 2024, during the 55th IFFI, and was also showcased at the 14th Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) in 2024.

Sanya Malhotra's deep bond with her character

Earlier in the chat about Mrs. Malhotra, she shared that she’s found her true passion. Her top two loves are dancing and acting. Brinda Gopal’s choreography aligns beautifully with the film’s storyline. As a professional dancer, Richa, her character, has a profound love for the art. She’s eager to accept her married life as it is, but she worries about losing her sense of self along the way. 

Malhotra mentioned that her journey as an actor is all about finding roles that align with her passions. She loves dancing and acting, and she feels lucky to have worked on a film like Mrs., where she found such a beautiful mix of both.
