Mr. Celebrity Story
Lalitha(Sree Deeksha) is a social activist who starts having weird dreams. One fine day, she approaches the cops and files a case stating that someone has raped her in her dream. At first, the cops laugh at her and ignore Lalitha. But one fine day, she targets a local YouTuber Lucky(Paruchuri Sudarshan), and states that he is the one who has raped her. The cops file a case and medical reports reveal that Lucky is the culprit. While at the lockup, Lucky finds out that all this is a setup as someone has framed a case on him, Lalitha, and a cop played by Raghu. He then hatches the plan, breaks free, and starts his investigation. Will he be successful or not is the basic story of the film.
Mr. Celebrity Review
Mr. Celebrity has been directed by Chandina Ravi Kishore and marks the debut of Paruchuri Sudharsh, the grandson of the legendary writers, Paruchuri Brothers. Mr. Celebrity is basically about how social media creates tensions in life, and how influencers and people in the society create rumors and spoil the lives of others. This is a very burning issue and one should appreciate the makers for choosing to narrate such an issue through a thriller.
Mr. Celebrity showcases how a young man and a woman are framed in the wrong case. The entire first half of the film is about how the cops frame Lucky in a case and only realize that things are not what they seem to be. The scenes of the heroine dreaming about someone raping her in her dreams are showcased quite well.
Also, how the young man is framed in the case looks interesting. But from there, things fall flat and do not make much sense. How the hero escapes along with the heroine, and a cop and investigates things by himself looks silly to the core. The logic goes for a toss and the way the young hero dominates things looks forced and over the top.
The entire first half is boring and does not create any impact. But the director saves his best for the second half. When he unleashes the case and introduces the character of Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, things turn on its head and make the proceedings interesting. The intro of Varalaxmi happens with a song and the twist that she brings in is huge.
The actual motto of the film is executed well and her flashback with Nasser, and how things go out of hand due to a small rumor and spoil the lives of many is showcased interestingly. The characters of Nasser and Varalaxmi bring depth to the film and the climax is quite interesting and ends with a good message about how today's youth is spreading fake news.
Coming to the performances, Paruchuri Sudharshan is decent in his role. As this is his first film, he needs to improve a bit for a debutante, he has done well. Sree Deeksha is also okay in her role. But one gets a feeling that she should have done well in the emotional scenes. Raghu Babu's comedy is not that great and many scenes of him should have been edited out.
Nasser plays a very emotional role and brings a lot of depth to the film. The actual hero of the film is Varalaxmi Sarathkumar. Despite her making an entry only in the last forty minutes, she makes things look interesting with her dialogue delivery and message to society. The production values are decent and so is the camerawork.
The editing is bad in the first half. The screenplay clicks in the second half and a tighter narration in the first half would have made matters a lot better. In a way, Mr. Celebrity is an emotional drama about how innocents are framed by selfish people in society. While the film starts on a predictable note, things end well due to the entry of Varalaxmi SarathKumar.
Mr. Celebrity Verdict
On the whole, Mr. Celebrity is a message oriented social drama that addresses various corrupt issues in the society. While the first half is silly, the presence of Varalaxmi Sarathkumar makes things work in the last forty minutes.
