The world of Sony's Marvel universe, popularly called the Sony Spider-Man Universe (SSU), has been having a very tough time. In the past couple of years, apart from Spider-Man: No Way Home, nothing has really landed like it was expected to. This means no movie that has been standalone made by Sony has managed to achieve the highest. He it Jared Leto starrer Morbius who ended up becoming a meme template but not a successful film, or Madame Web which went on to enter the race of tip flops (which is not a good feat to achieve). Everyone has been busy finding a problem that has plagued the studios’ efforts to make a successful movie. It was recently when Dakota Johnson spoke of the committee presiding over movies.
Morbius Director On Failure
Turns out she is not the only one who feels like that because she now has a partner. Morbius director Daniel Espinosa has now opened up about why the Jared Leto starrer failed at the Box office and what led to it behind the scenes. Espinosa while being diplomatic and blaming himself too for the blunder labeling himself unfit for the part, went on to talk about how it is very difficult to make films that go through committee. Read on to know exactly what he said.
Yes, Morbius director Daniel Espinosa admitted as per Deadline. I think making a movie through committee is very hard, and I felt in the end that maybe a different director would have been a better fit. I’m known amongst the studios to be a person with a lot of opinions, and maybe they were not looking for that kind of director. The comment comes right after Madame Web director Dakota Johnson recently spoke about a similar issue.
As per Comic Book Movie, Dakota Johnson had said, It's so hard to get movies made, and in these big movies that get made - and it's even starting to happen with the little ones, which is what’s really freaking me out - decisions are being made by committees, and art does not do well when it’s made by committee. Films are made by a filmmaker and a team of artists around them. But it was definitely an experience for me to make that movie. I had never done anything like it before. I probably will never do anything like it again because I don’t make sense in that world. And I know that now.
These comments do put a very bad light on Sony’s work culture. The studio is now coming up with Kraven The Hunter that stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson in the lead and is one of the most anticipated movies of the year. The film is set to release on December 13, 2024. Before that they will also have Venom: The Last Dance aka Venom 3, the third and final movie in the standalone trilogy released on October 25. Hopes are too high and the studio needs one standalone hit to invest more this universe.
Morbius streams on SonyLIV in India and you can watch it with your OTTplay Premium subscription too. Madame Web is streaming on Netflix and on Zee5 on rent. Stay tuned to OTTplay for more information on this and everything else from the world of streaming and films.
