Mohanlal’s Thudarum Secures Disney+ Hotstar OTT Deal – But Is It Final?

A significant reason provided by the producers of Mohanlal’s Thudarum, which was scheduled for theatrical release at the end of January, was the unsold status of its OTT rights. However, this assertion appears to be inaccurate, based on information from the film's production team.
In a recent interview, K Suresh Kumar, an official from the Kerala Producers’ Association, stated that a prominent streaming platform had acquired the movie's OTT rights. He mentioned that the producers decided to postpone the release to avoid violating the contract. Nevertheless, reports indicate that the film's OTT rights were actually sold earlier this year, prior to the anticipated theatrical release on January 27.
Will Thudarum release on Disney+ Hotstar after its theatrical run?
A representative from the team informed that the streaming rights for the film were acquired by Disney+ Hotstar in January. However, the agreement did not meet the expectations typically associated with a Mohanlal film. The source explained that this was due to two primary factors. Firstly, officials from the streaming platform were reluctant to release a Malayalam film in the last quarter of the year, particularly with the impending transition to JioStar. Secondly, the theatrical release of Mohanlal's Barroz in December did not garner the anticipated audience response.
In addition, the film's producer, M Renjith, is also supporting the forthcoming Hotstar Special series, Love Under Construction. Directed by Vishnu G Raghav, the series features Neeraj Madhav, Aju Varghese, and Gouri Kishan in its cast and is set to premiere on Disney+ Hotstar on February 28.

The source further indicates that the producers of Thudarum are engaged in negotiations with additional streaming platforms regarding the OTT rights, with the aim of securing a more favourable agreement than that proposed by Hotstar. Currently, the directorial work of Tharun Moorthy, which features Shobana among its cast, is anticipated to premiere in theatres by the end of April or in May.
