Mohanlal’s L2 Empuraan Sets 2025 Opening Record but Misses Marco’s Mark

Mohanlal’s L2 Empuraan Sets 2025 Opening Record but Misses Marco’s Mark

Despite facing its share of controversies, L2: Empuraan, featuring Mohanlal and Prithviraj Sukumaran, has quickly established itself as the highest-grossing Indian film opener of 2025, amassing over Rs 200 crore at the global box office within just a week. This remarkable achievement is particularly noteworthy, as it has only been accomplished once before in the annals of Malayalam cinema. While this high-budget action-thriller has shattered numerous box-office records in the Malayalam film industry, one particular record remains unbroken by Empuraan.

Interestingly, this record is held by another Malayalam film, Unni Mukundan’s Marco, which also faced its own set of controversies during its theatrical run in 2025. Rated A for its graphic violence and gore, Marco achieved the highest earnings for a Hindi-dubbed version of a Malayalam film, grossing nearly Rs 14 crore, whereas the previous record was held by Prithviraj’s Aadujeevitham, which earned only Rs 42 lakh.

Empuraan fails to break Marco’s Hindi box office record

After a week of release, the Hindi version of Empuraan has only generated Rs 1.98 crore. Given the lukewarm reception of Empuraan's dubbed versions compared to the original Malayalam release, it seems unlikely that the Hindi dub will surpass Marco’s record during its theatrical run in North India. Additionally, Empuraan was unable to capitalize on the negative reviews of Salman Khan's Sikandar, which premiered on Sunday. In contrast, Marco had taken over the screens from Varun Dhawan's Baby John in North India after the latter's disappointing box office performance.

On a positive note, Empuraan has become the second fastest international film to reach 400,000 admissions in the UAE, trailing only behind Avengers: Endgame, according to its producers. The film outperformed Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan and Jawan, becoming the most viewed film in the UAE during the Eid weekend.

Could Mohanlal’s Empuraan rake in Rs 300 Cr at the box office?

As reported by the film industry tracking platform Sacnilk, Empuraan has achieved a gross collection of Rs 98.70 Cr in India over the course of seven days, bringing its total global earnings to Rs 231 Cr. The film is set to remain in theaters for an additional week, and the producers are optimistic that Empuraan will become the first Malayalam film to reach a worldwide gross of Rs 300 Cr.
