L2 Empuraan's global box office earnings on day 5: Prithviraj Sukumaran, who both acts in and directs the film, has seen his third directorial venture, L2 Empuraan, continue to perform strongly at the box office, even amid some controversy. Since its debut on March 27, the movie has raked in ₹200 crore worldwide and is on the verge of surpassing the total earnings of Manjummel Boys.

L2 Empuraan global box office performance

Producer Antony Perumbavoor's Aashirvad Cinemas shared on Instagram that L2 Empuraan has surpassed the ₹200 crore milestone in under a week. They celebrated, saying, “The OVERLORD breaks the 200 crore barrier with flair! EMPURAAN is making history!”

According to Sacnilk, the film earned ₹70.15 crore net and ₹82 crore gross in India within five days, totaling ₹200 crore globally. To put this in perspective, the 2019 film Lucifer, which is the prequel to L2 Empuraan, earned ₹127 crore worldwide throughout its entire run.

The figures are remarkable, positioning L2 Empuraan as the second-highest-grossing Malayalam film ever, following Manjummel Boys, and the third-highest-grossing Indian film this year, behind Chhaava and Sankranthiki Vasthunam.

Manjummel Boys raked in ₹240.5 crore throughout its run, and L2 Empuraan is on the verge of surpassing that. Chhaava amassed an impressive ₹798.10 crore in just 45 days, while Sankranthiki Vasthunam earned ₹255.2 crore globally over its entire run.

L2 Empuraan scenes cut out because of the controversy

Since L2 Empuraan premiered on March 27, it has garnered positive reviews but has also sparked controversy due to its portrayal of the 2002 Gujarat riots. Producer Antony shared with the media in Kochi that more than two minutes of footage deemed to have 'hurt sentiments' has been removed from the film, emphasizing that this decision was not made under 'threats or pressure.'

As reported by PTI, he stated, “There’s no reason to be afraid. We live in a community. We never aimed to offend anyone. If there are people who are upset with the film, it’s our duty as producers, directors, and actors to address their concerns.”
