About L2 Empuraan
L2 Empuraan serves as a continuation of the acclaimed 2019 film Lucifer, which first presented Mohanlal in the role of the enigmatic Stephen Nedumpally, also known as Khureshi Ab'raam. This sequel explores further the complexities of the individual who oversees a network combating drug cartels. At the conclusion of L2 Empuraan, Pranav Mohanlal, Mohanlal’s son, is introduced as a young version of Stephen set in 1980s Mumbai. Additionally, American actor Rick Yune is cast as the new antagonist, leading a criminal organization known as the Shenlong ‘Shen’ Triad. The film also features significant performances by Tovino Thomas, Manju Warrier, and Abhimanyu Singh.
Controversy surrounding the film
The team behind L2 Empuraan implemented 24 edits to the film following criticism for its perceived misrepresentation of the 2002 Gujarat riots. This included the removal of scenes that portrayed violence against women and a religious site. Additional modifications were made, such as altering the name of the antagonist and eliminating dialogues between certain characters. As a result, the film's runtime has been reduced by 2 minutes and 8 seconds. Nevertheless, it remains uncertain whether the controversy will impact the film's performance in the days ahead.
