13 days ago | 5 Views
The controversy surrounding the film Empuraan persists in Malayalam cinema. Recent updates indicate that the film has undergone re-censorship, resulting in a total of 24 cuts. Notably, the name of the antagonist has been altered, and scenes depicting violence against women and religious structures have been eliminated. Additionally, the name of actor-politician Suresh Gopi has been removed from the credits. Here are the details regarding the re-censorship of the film featuring Mohanlal and Prithviraj Sukumaran.
24 cuts in Empuraan
Empuraan, the follow-up to the Mohanlal-led film Lucifer, has garnered significant attention since its release on March 27, 2025. Following protests from right-wing supporters, the filmmakers opted to implement 'voluntary modifications' to the movie. According to a list circulated online, two names, including that of BJP leader Suresh Gopi, have been omitted from the credits. Additionally, several scenes depicting violence against women have been excised. Footage showing vehicles passing by religious sites has been edited out, and one specific image of a religious structure has also been removed. Furthermore, the term NIA has been muted in the film.
In a key change, the name of Belraj was replaced as Baldev. Some conversations between characters were removed or muted. A total of 24 changes have been made that come up to 2 minutes and 8 seconds.
Empuraan controversy
Empuraan became embroiled in controversy following objections from right-wing groups regarding specific segments of the film. After its first-day-first-show, social media reactions were polarized, with some individuals commending the creators, while others criticized the film, labeling it as 'propaganda.'

As the controversy attracted widespread national attention, Mohanlal took to Facebook to express his regret, a post that was subsequently shared by Prithviraj Sukumaran and producer Antony Perumbavoor. It is worth mentioning that writer Murali Gopy has neither shared Mohanlal's post nor publicly commented on the matter thus far. Previously, Antony Perumbavoor stated that there was no internal disagreement within the Empuraan team regarding proposed changes.
Empuraan premiered in theaters six years after the release of Lucifer, which is regarded as one of Mohanlal's major blockbuster thrillers. Lucifer also marked the directorial debut of Prithviraj Sukumaran, who is among the most prominent actors in Mollywood.
