Mohanlal's significant directorial debut, Barroz, has recently premiered on Disney+ Hotstar following a disappointing theatrical release. Some devoted fans of the Malayalam icon were optimistic that the film might receive a warmer reception from the OTT audience. Nevertheless, reactions from netizens on platforms such as Twitter and Reddit suggest that the prospects for Barroz have not improved. Here is a summary of the online responses to Mohanlal's Barroz.

Mohanlal’s Barroz draws negative reactions

Mohanlal not only directed but also starred in Barroz, which premiered on Disney+ Hotstar on January 22, 2025. This 3D children's fantasy film centres on Barroz, who is tasked with safeguarding Da Gama's treasure until the rightful heir arrives.

Despite its substantial budget and the involvement of technical experts from around the globe, Barroz did not succeed in captivating audiences. Instead, it faced a barrage of criticism, particularly aimed at its leading actor, who is often referred to as The Complete Actor.

Following the viewing of the film, or even during its early segments, fans expressed their disbelief. One social media user remarked, “Can't believe a fine actor has been reduced to doing this...”. Another individual mentioned that they ceased watching Barroz after just 10 minutes. A selection of additional reactions can be found on Twitter.

Reactions within the Reddit community of 'Barroz Brainrot' reveal a similar sentiment, as users expressed confusion regarding the film's direction. 

"Individuals are attributing blame to the actor and the producer. Who was the director again?" one comment inquired. 

Another user remarked, "With all due respect to Mohanlal, did no one notice this during the preview or editing process? How could such a frame be permitted for release? Was there no one to advise Lalettan?" 

Following the emergence of certain scenes from the film online, many users struggled to accept that they were indeed part of Barroz. "This must be fake, come on... Are you seriously telling me these are actual clips from the movie????!!" one Redditor exclaimed.

The technical elements of the film received criticism, particularly regarding the cinematography by Santosh Sivan and the colour grading, which also faced negative feedback.

One comment expressed, "Why is the cinematography so poor? Wasn't Santosh Sivan responsible for this film? It resembles an Asianet serial."

Fans pin hope on L2 Empuraan

Despite the criticism directed at Barroz, a segment of devoted fans remained optimistic that Mohanlal's box office success would improve with the launch of L2 Empuraan.

The upcoming second instalment of the Lucifer trilogy, helmed by Prithviraj and featuring Mohanlal, is scheduled for release on March 27, 2025.

Additionally, Mohanlal's highly awaited film for 2025, titled Thudarum, marks his reunion with Shobana after a significant break. Directed by Tharun Moorthy, this film was originally set to premiere on January 30, 2025; however, recent reports indicate that its release has been postponed.
