Reports have been buzzing that Malayalam superstar Mohanlal is set to portray Rishab Shetty’s father in Kantara Chapter 1. This speculation kicked off after Rishab met Mohanlal in April last year, with insiders suggesting that the Malayalam actor would play a significant part in the prequel to Kantara. Given Mohanlal's history of making cameo appearances in Kannada films such as Love and Mythri, along with his upcoming role in the Telugu film Kannappa, it seemed plausible that he would join the cast of Kantara: Chapter 1.

Mohanlal expresses interest in a role for Kantara Chapter 1

Since then, neither Rishab nor Mohanlal has confirmed or denied the rumors. So, when Mohanlal showed up in Bengaluru to promote his latest film, L2 Empuraan, which premiered on March 27, he was asked about his involvement in Katara: Chapter 1. He jokingly replied, “Please ask them to cast me in Kantara 2; I’d love to have a role. I’m not a bad actor, I think,” which made it clear that he isn’t part of Rishab’s project at this time.

On another note, Kantara: Chapter 1 is a period fantasy action drama set during the Kadambas of Banavasi era. There are also rumors that Rishab might explore the origins of the Panjurli Daiva, given its importance to the series. The film is scheduled for release on October 2, 2025, but sources indicate that research and filming delays could push that date back.

At the same time, Mohanlal's Empuraan, the sequel in the Lucifer trilogy, received a mix of reviews. Although the reactions aren't bad, this second part, which boasts a much grander scale than the first, hasn't quite met the high expectations set by Lucifer when it comes to the story. However, Empuraan is being praised as a visual feast, showcasing a level of production that’s unprecedented in Malayalam cinema.
