Mithya marks the directorial debut of Sumanth Bhat, who previously directed segments of the Kannada anthology series Ekam. The film had a successful festival journey, beginning with its premiere at the MAMI festival in Mumbai in 2023. After more than a year and a half of international screenings, the film, produced by Rakshit Shetty’s Paramvah Studios, known for Ulidavaru Kandanthe, was released in theaters in March of this year.

Despite receiving positive reviews, Mithya struggled to gain traction at the box office, attributed to its classification as a festival film, with estimates indicating it earned only Rs 17 lakh net from theaters. However, the favorable reception has paved the way for its release on OTT platforms, with Amazon Prime Video set to stream it. Starting April 18, Mithya will be available on the platform, making it the ninth film out of approximately 70 released in the first quarter of 2025 to transition to OTT.

The film features Athish Shetty in the lead role as Mithun, affectionately known as Mithya by his friends and family. Mithya, who lived with his parents and younger sister Vandana, faces upheaval when he suddenly loses both parents and becomes embroiled in a custody dispute between the two families.

In Udupi, a place unfamiliar to the Mumbai-raised Mithya, he grapples with his new environment, suspicions surrounding his father's death, and the realization that tensions between his parents escalated following the birth of his sister. This complex emotional landscape is central to Sumanth’s narrative, which draws inspiration from a real-life incident that the filmmaker personally observed.

Mithya features Prakash Thuminad and Roopa Varkady in key roles, with Midhun Mukundan serving as the music director. This film is one of the final projects produced by Rakshit for his group of Seven Odds writers, which has previously included titles such as Avane Srimannarayana, Bachelor Party, and Ibbani Tabbida Ileyali, among others.
