As we finish one third of 2025, the report card of Tamil cinema appears to be average with only occasional successes. Nevertheless, there is hope that this will improve in May, as several films are scheduled to hit theaters. Although the major releases such as Coolie, Thug Life, and Idly Kadai are planned for the latter half, May will present its own exciting releases. Below are Tamil films set to dominate theaters in May 2025.

Highly anticipated Tamil movie releases coming in May 2025

Retro – May 1

Featuring Suriya in the main role, Retro is an anticipated romantic action movie directed by Karthik Subbaraj. This film represents the initial partnership between the director of Pizza and the actor from Pithamagan. Retro also includes performances from Pooja Hegde, Jayaram, Joju George, and more. With music composed by Santhosh Narayanan, the single Kanima has turned into a viral sensation on social networks. Actress Shriya Saran will be appearing in a cameo for a dance segment in the film.

Tourist Family – May 1

Tourist Family is a comedic family drama featuring Sasikumar and Simran in the main roles. Despite having previously worked together in Petta, the actors did not share any scenes, making Tourist Family their first on-screen collaboration. The film is helmed by first-time director Abishan Jeevinth. It focuses on a family of four who are Sri Lankan Tamils looking for refuge in Tamil Nadu. The cast includes Yogi Babu, Mithun Jai Sankar, Kamalesh, MS Bhaskar, Ramesh Thilak, Bucks, Elango Kumaravel, and Sreeja Ravi.

DD Next Level – May 16

The fourth installment in the horror comedy film series Dhilluku Dhuddu, named DD Next Level, features Santhanam as the main character. Prem Anand, who directed DD Returns, will return as the director for DD Next Level. The ensemble cast of DD Next Level includes Gautham Menon, Selvaraghavan, Yashika Anand, Rajendran, and more. The storyline of the film is set aboard a cruise ship and on an island.

Maaman – May 16

Soori, known for his outstanding performances as the lead actor in Viduthalai and Kottukkaali, is preparing to collaborate with Vilangu director Prasant Pandiyaraj. The movie showcases Aishwarya Lekshmi in the female lead role, with composer Hesham Abdul Wahab, recognized for Hridayam, providing the music. The ensemble cast of Maaman also includes Rajkiran, Geetha Kailasam, Swasika, Bala Saravanan, and others.

Ace – May 23

Vijay Sethupathi's Ace is directed by Aarumugakumar and features the first performance of Kannada actor Rukmini Vasanth. The movie's music is composed by Justin Prabhakaran, while Karan B Rawat serves as the cinematographer. The editing is done by Fenny Oliver. Yogi Babu, Divya Pillai, Babloo Prithveeraj, BS Avinash, Muthu Kumar, Raj Kumar, Denes Kumar, and others are also included in the cast.
