Dhruva Sarja’s Martin, which was thought to be the next big thing from Kannada cinema, not only turned out to be a box office disaster, but was also panned by audiences and critics across the country. The film released on October 11, in competition with Rajinikanth’s Vettaiyan, as the Dasara offering, in multiple languages. Said to have been made at an undisclosed budget ranging between Rs 100 cr to Rs 120 cr, Martin had a good opening, but it soon fizzled out, once negative reviews about the film came out
The film became available on OTT just over a month later on November 15, when it dropped on Amazon Prime Video in Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam on rental basis for audiences in the UK and USA. There was a buzz that the India OTT rights were with Zee Network, but a source from the team later clarified that Prime Video would be the streaming partner here too. The platform has picked up the film on pay-per-view basis.
Martin streaming on 2 platforms
As of November 19, Martin is available on Prime Video in Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam. Interestingly, the Telugu version of the AP Arjun directorial has found another home and is streaming on aha Telugu too. The Kannada satellite rights are with Zee Kannada.
Martin, meanwhile, was produced by Uday K Mehta and directed by AP Arjun, who made Dhruva’s debut film Addhuri. The film was based on a story by Dhruva’s uncle, Arjun Sarja, in which the actor had a double role – as the patriotic gangster Martin and a customs official called Arjun. The film revolves around Arjun’s attempts to apprehend Martin, and what ensues is a cat-and-mouse chase between them. The film, which has music by Ravi Basrur, also stars Vaibhavi Shandilya, Anveshi Jain, Nikitin Dheer, among others.
According to a source, producer Uday will collaborate with Dhruva on another film shortly. The duo were to earlier work on a film by Nandakishore called Dubaari, but that was shelved and instead they did Martin. In fact, Martin ended with a lead in into a sequel, with a new character called Rhino. Could that be it?
