Twisters is set for a comprehensive release on OTT platforms following its rental availability on Prime Video. The film will commence streaming on JioCinema (OTTplay Premium) starting December 18, 2024. Directed by Lee Isaac Chung, Twisters is a disaster film with a screenplay by Mark L. Smith and contributions to the plot by Joseph Kosinski. The cast includes Sasha Lane, Maura Tierney, Anthony Ramos, Brandon Perea, Glen Powell, and Daisy Edgar-Jones, and it serves as a sequel to the 1996 film Twister. The narrative follows competing storm chaser teams in Oklahoma as they investigate a series of tornado outbreaks.
Plot overview
Twisters brings back the exhilarating essence of the original disaster epic with a series of breathtaking action sequences. Kate (Daisy Edgar-Jones) has refrained from pursuing storms across the Oklahoma plains after a harrowing encounter with a tornado. Now, she conducts her storm studies safely from New York City. When her friend Javi (Anthony Ramos) invites her back into the field for a unique scientific opportunity, she encounters Tyler (Glen Powell), a charismatic daredevil and self-styled tornado wrangler whose relentless pursuit of tornado-tracking fame has garnered him a significant social media following. As the storm season intensifies with alarming new phenomena, Kate and Tyler may need to collaborate to navigate an unprecedented surge of destructive tornadoes.
The film has received favorable reviews from critics and has grossed $371 million worldwide.
Visual effects and technical accuracy
The visual effects team and technical consultants, including storm chaser Sean Casey, utilized real tornado and supercell cloud footage to create the tornadoes depicted in the film. The climactic tornado was modeled after a wedge tornado that impacted Kansas in 2023, a tornado that affected Western Kentucky in 2021, and the El Reno tornado of 2013.
Chung noted that achieving a balance between the entertaining aspects of the natural disasters portrayed in Twisters and their serious real-life implications was the most challenging element of the filmmaking process.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration supplied logos and props, collaborating closely with the creators of Twisters during the production process. The organization further stated that the video only partially represented its role in ensuring scientific accuracy.
