This year, after an extended anticipation, Valentine's Day is poised to transform into a day of violence with the release of Marco OTT. The Malayalam neo-noir action thriller, featuring Unni Mukundan in the lead role, is scheduled to premiere on SonyLIV (OTTplay Premium) starting February 14, 2025. In addition to the original Malayalam version, the film will also be available in dubbed versions in Kannada, Tamil, and Telugu. Nevertheless, social media users were quick to highlight that, despite the Hindi-dubbed version achieving significant success at the box office, it has not been granted an OTT release.

Produced by Cubes Entertainments and featuring a screenplay by Haneef Adeni, Mukundan includes supporting performances by Jagadish, Anson Paul, Kabir Duhan Singh, Abhimanyu S. Thilakan, and Yukti Thareja. The film was shot by Chandru Selvaraj and edited by Shameer Muhammed, with the musical score composed by Ravi Basrur.

In the narrative of Marco, the Adattu family is recognized in Kerala for their significant involvement in the gold trade. An unexpected incident disrupts the Adattu family, prompting the family patriarch, George, to investigate the circumstances and identify the perpetrator. Meanwhile, Marco, his younger brother, embarks on a parallel quest, albeit through a different approach. This premise forms the foundation of Marco, a dramatic thriller marked by intensity and brutality.

The 2019 film Mikhael serves as the inspiration for this spinoff, although the two films are distinct and feature a completely different ensemble of characters.

Box office success and record-breaking performances

The worldwide debut of Marco occurred on Christmas Eve, 2024. It achieved the status of the highest-grossing A-rated Malayalam film in history, ranking as the sixth highest-grossing Malayalam film of the year and the ninth highest-grossing Malayalam film overall. The film received well-deserved acclaim from both critics and audiences.

Following its success in the Hindi-speaking market, where it surpassed The Goat Life (2024) and 2018 (2023), the Hindi version of the film has emerged as the highest-grossing Malayalam dubbed film, amassing ₹5 crore as of January 3, 2025. The film has generated ₹40 crore from Kerala, ₹20 crore from the Rest of India (ROI), and ₹31 crore from international markets, bringing its total worldwide gross to ₹91 crore within a mere 17 days. As of January 12, 2025, the film's overall worldwide gross is estimated to be between ₹104 crore and ₹115 crore.

Sequel confirmed

The film concludes with a hint of a forthcoming sequel. Haneef Adeni has confirmed that the sequel is expected to feature increased levels of violence and action compared to the original film.
