The Malayalam film Marco is poised to become the highest-grossing action film in the industry, having surpassed Rs 50 crore in global earnings since its premiere on December 20.
On its fifth day, the film earned Rs 3.5 crore, despite facing significant competition from Mohanlal’s Barroz on the sixth day, which coincided with Christmas. Nevertheless, Marco maintained its momentum, collecting an additional Rs 3.5 crore, bringing its total domestic revenue to Rs 25.05 crore, as per preliminary estimates from industry tracker Sacnilk.
Marco's box office gross holds steady on Day 6
During the weekend, the film achieved a gross exceeding Rs 5 Cr, particularly on Sunday; however, its earnings during the weekdays experienced a decline. This trend was anticipated, given that it is an A-rated film, which likely deterred families from choosing it as their entertainment option during the Christmas and New Year holidays.
Nevertheless, despite Barroz receiving negative reviews and other films like Rifle Club and Extra Decent failing to attract increased bookings, Marco has maintained a stable performance and garnered a commendable gross. Additionally, screenings in other cities, including Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Delhi, witnessed a rise in occupancy rates.
Could Marco cross Rs 100 crore?
The producers of the film have already recognized Unni Mukundan as the forthcoming Superstar of Malayalam cinema. "Marco" marks the actor's second solo film to achieve the milestone of Rs 100 crore, following "Mallikappuram." Given that the previous film resonated with audiences of all ages, the achievement of "Marco," which primarily targets a specific demographic of individuals aged 18 and above, is indeed noteworthy.
It remains to be seen whether the film will reach a worldwide gross of Rs 100 crore, but this remains a possibility, especially since the Telugu version of "Marco" has yet to be released. The producers, who sold the rights for Rs 3 crore, have confirmed that the film is set to premiere in theatres on January 1, 2025.
The cast of "Marco" also includes Kabir Duhan Singh, Jagadeesh, and Siddique. While the film draws inspiration from the character Marco in "Mikhael," it does not share any direct connection with the Nivin Pauly film.
