The Malayalam film industry appears poised to approve the production of more intense action films, as evidenced by the recent success of its latest release, "Marco," featuring Unni Mukundan in the lead role. This film has been breaking new box office records for an A-rated production within the industry.
Directed by Haneef Adeni, "Marco" has already amassed nearly Rs 9 crore within its first two days of release. It further increased its earnings by generating Rs 5.25 crore from Indian markets on the third day, culminating its opening weekend with an impressive total of Rs 14.20 crore—marking a historic achievement for a Malayalam action film.
Marco Day 3 box office collection sees a further spike
Marco recognized as the most violent action film in Malayalam cinema, has indeed fulfilled this reputation with its intense brutality. It has outperformed all its box-office rivals, including Aashiq Abu’s Rifle Club, Suraj Venjaramoodu’s Extra Decent, and Vijay Sethupathi’s Viduthalai: Part 2.
According to reports from the film's production team, Marco has achieved a worldwide gross of Rs 35 Cr, with an impressive increase of Rs 14 Cr on Sunday alone. The film is currently being screened in theatres across Australia and the Middle East.
Industry analysts from Sacnilk indicate that the film experienced an average theatre occupancy rate of 78% on Sunday, which is a promising indicator, particularly for a violent film during the weekend. It remains to be seen if Marco can maintain this momentum throughout the Christmas week, especially among early viewers predominantly aged 18 to 35 years.
Additionally, Marco has garnered Rs 2.22 Cr from the Indian market outside of its primary region, with the Hindi version contributing a notable Rs 11 lakh out of a total of Rs 96 lakh on Sunday.

Marco's upcoming box office challenge will be the Christmas Day releases: Mohanlal's Barroz and Varun Dhawan’s Baby John. The former is a 3D fantasy film aimed at children, while Baby John is characterized as an action-packed entertainer.
In a recent interview with the media, Unni expressed his anticipation for Mohanlal’s directorial debut, while also conveying his hope that the success of Marco paves the way for more action films. “This genre resonates well with the youth,” Unni remarked.
