This year is shaping up to be exciting for fans of Malayalam cinema, especially for those who love its two biggest stars – Mohanlal and Mammootty. The two will share the screen again after a twelve-year break in Mahesh Narayanan’s upcoming film, which is currently in production. Before that, there’s a lot of buzz that fans might get to see them together in the highly anticipated L2: Empuraan, directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran.

Even though Prithviraj has stated that “Mammootty sir is not part of this installment of the franchise,” producer Joby George recently hinted in an interview that we might actually see both Mammootty and Mohanlal together on screen twice this year.

The producer of Joby’s Narayaneente Moonnaannmakkal, who was initially on board to support Mahesh’s action flick but had to back out because of the hefty budget, praised both superstars as the greatest gifts to Malayalam cinema.

“For the fans of Mammootty and Mohanlal, this year is all about ‘double fun’. They both have major films lined up. Mahesh Narayanan’s project with Mammootty is huge, and then there’s Prithviraj’s Empuraan,” he mentioned. Fans are speculating that the producer might have hinted at Mammootty being part of the second installment of the Lucifer series, which is set to release on March 27.

Mammootty dropped the teaser for L2: Empuraan at an event in Kochi on January 26. Prithviraj mentioned, “He has a really strong connection with Mohanlal sir, and he looks at me in a similar way.” He also pointed out that Mammootty was the one who unveiled the teaser for Lucifer back in 2019.

The actor expressed his hope that this camaraderie among Malayalam stars keeps going strong and benefits the industry. Talking about the Mahesh Narayanan project, he added, “I’m super excited to see more multi-starrers coming up, and it’s been a while since we’ve had the two Ms together.”
