Filmmaker and occasional actor Gautham Vasudev Menon is set to make his directorial debut in Malayalam cinema with the film "Dominic and the Ladies’ Purse," featuring Mammootty in the lead role as a former police officer who transitions into a private detective. The production, under the banner of Mammootty Kampany, commenced in July 2024 and is scheduled for release just six months later, a timeline that the filmmaker acknowledges as the quickest he has ever completed a project.

In an interview with Galatta Plus, Gautham provided insights regarding his latest project, stating, “Dominic and the Ladies’ Purse" is undoubtedly my quickest film in terms of production and release. For instance, I completed Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu in 52 days, albeit over a year, while Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu took 78 days, and also stretched over a year. The extended timelines were due to various factors, including the gradual influx of funding for our projects, which often complicates matters. However, this time, that was not a concern.”

From the very beginning, the timeline for the project was established, allowing the team to finish the film with five days to spare. Gautham successfully adhered to the budget he had proposed for Dominic and the Ladies’ Purse. He expressed a desire for more time to relax and engage in additional writing, as well as to review the editing process—luxuries he found lacking. Nevertheless, the daily interactions with Mammootty on set and the collaborative discussions were invigorating and compensated for the absence of that extra time.

Although Gautham had worked with Mammootty as an actor on Bazooka, as a filmmaker, he said he looked forward to seeing how the actor would bring scenes to life. “It’s very unpredictable as to what he will come up with in a shot. You can write it, but you cannot fathom that ‘this’ is what he will do. He surprised us at every point,” he adds.
