Akhil Akkineni's film, Agent, failed to resonate with audiences upon its theatrical release, marking it as the most significant box office failure of his career to date. The financial losses were so substantial that a dispute arose between the filmmakers and distributors, prolonging the film's release on OTT platforms for nearly two years. Sony LIV acquired the rights to the film and made several attempts to premiere it. Ultimately, it was released on the evening of March 13, 2025. The feedback from viewers on the OTT platform suggests that the negative sentiment towards Surender Reddy's direction persists.

Interestingly, much of the criticism this time is aimed at the renowned Malayalam actor Mammootty, who plays a crucial role in the film. He portrays Col Mahadev, the chief of RAW, who unofficially enlists Ramakrishna, also known as Ricky, referred to as Wild Saala (Akhil), for a mission. Fans of Mammootty in Kerala have taken to social media to express their concerns regarding his apparent disinterest in the film's events and the film's unrealistic plot points.

A comment read, "Ikka as Devil Madadev is unbearable," while another user questioned whether Malayalam actors lose their acting skills when they transition to films in other languages or if that is simply the directing style employed by filmmakers in those regions. A third individual remarked, "I managed to endure an hour before I realized my Star Health insurance does not cover this level of distress." Additionally, many found humor in the action scenes featuring the actor, noting that his grip on the rifle resembled that of someone handling a party popper.

Agent follows Wild Saala as he pursues Dharma, a rogue RAW agent portrayed by Dino Morea, who aims to unleash chaos through a lethal virus. The film features a talented cast including Sakshi Vaidya, Vikramjeet Virk, Denzil Smith, Sampath Raj, Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, Anu Prabhakar, Vennela Kishore, Posani Murali Krishna, P Sai Kumar, Murali Sharma, among others. Additionally, Urvarshi Rautela makes an appearance in the special number "Wild Saala."
