Madras HC restrains release of Kanguva and Thangalaan
Studio Green production banner is getting ready for the release of Thangalaan on August 15. Ahead of this, the Madras HC has restrained the release of the film, along with other production, Kanguva, until Studio Green pays Rs 1 crore for each film.
Justices G. Jayachandran and C.V. Karthikeyan were hearing a petition that was filed by HC's official assignee who is responsible for recovering debts after late businessman Arjunlal Sunderdas was declared insolvent. After the official assignee had filed an application before the HC that Arjunlal has been found guilty of cheating and had decided to co-produce a film along with Studio Green by chipping in Rs 40 crore, it has been learnt that Arjunlal had paid Rs 12.85 crore. However, the businessman stepped down after he could not provide any money further. Studio Green had paid back him Rs 2.5 crore, leaving a balance of Rs 10.35 crore, citing that the money was used for pre-production.
More on the case
While the assignee has asked the court to direct the production house to pay the rest with loan interest, Studio Green contested that Arjunlal was given the Hindi remake rights of three Tamil films, Biryani, Madras and All In All Azhaguraja. The production house claimed that only the photocopy of the agreement is left after the original destroyed in 2015 floods. With the court not expressing confidence on the production's statement, it ordered a deposit of Rs 10.35 crore along with interest. The court has asked Studio Green.
Thangalaan is set to release on August 15, which depends on the production house’s obeyance of paying Rs one crore before the film release.
