Luck-Squid Game plagiarism row: Instead of the Indian movie, here's the Japanese film the Korean series took inspiration from

The makers of the Indian film Luck have charged Squid Game with plagiarism. Netflix has responded to the claims stating it has no merit. They promise to defend the matter vigorously. The Indian movie, starring Sanjay Dutt, Imran Khan, and Shruti Haasan in the lead roles, was about people forcibly entering a game and realizing only one out of them can survive. The concept is similar to Squid Game, but the series is inspired by a Japanese movie instead, and the makers have already claimed that they took inspiration from the novel that the film was based on.

The Japanese movie

The Japanese film Battle Royale, released in 2000, is the closest inspiration for Squid Game. The movie is based on a novel of the same name, and the Korean series has taken inspiration from the novel. Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk had already mentioned that his show was inspired by Battle Royale comics.

The plot and difference

Squid Game is about a secret contest where contestants play children's games, but they turn deadly, for there can be only one winner. That winner will be rewarded with a huge sum.

Directed by Kinkji Fukasu, Battle Royale, on the other hand, was literally about ninth-graders selected and forced to fight each other on a deserted island.

Luck, many netizens point out, is a copy of Battle Royale the game. It is to be noted that the 2009 release was declared a flop at the Box Office despite having A-listers of the time in the film. It is mainly because the screenplay did not resonate with the viewers.

Luck makes plagiarism claim ahead of Squid Game season 2 release

Squid Game season 2 will be out in December this year. With that, it will pave way for season 3 (releasing in 2025), post which the popular Korean reality show-esque series will come to an end. The season will introduce new cast members, including Im Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Sung-hoon, Park Gyu-young, and Jeon Seok-ho, among others.
