Asif Ali’s Rekhachithram is being celebrated as the first big hit of Malayalam cinema in 2025, impressing both critics and viewers alike. Anaswara Rajan has a significant part in the film, which is directed by Jofin T Chacko. However, it’s interesting to note that Anaswara wasn’t the initial pick for the role of Rekha in the movie. Anaswara Rajan wasn't the top pick for Rekhachithram

In a chat with Cinema Express, director Jofin T Chacko shared that they initially wanted to cast a newcomer for the role of Rekha, but watching Mohanlal's film Neru shifted his perspective.

"After seeing Neru, we realized Anaswara was the perfect fit," Jofin mentioned to Cinema Express.

Neru, featuring Mohanlal and Anaswara Rajan in a key role, is directed by Jeethu Joseph and hit theaters in 2023. Anaswara takes on the role of Sara, a blind sculptor who faces the trauma of sexual assault, while Mohanlal portrays an advocate dedicated to seeking justice for her. The film received a lot of praise for the powerful performances of the lead actors and its thoughtful handling of a sensitive topic.

Recently, the director shared that it was Anaswara's impactful performance in this film that led to her being cast in Rekhachithram.

In the film starring Asif Ali, Anaswara Rajan takes on the role of Rekha, an aspiring actress and a huge fan of the legendary Mammootty. However, she mysteriously vanishes from the set of Mammootty’s movie Kaathodu Kaathoram back in 1985. Fast forward forty years, and a detective, played by Asif Ali, embarks on a quest to uncover the truth behind Rekha's disappearance.

The cast also features notable performances from Manoj K Jayan, Zarin Shihab, and Siddique, along with Jagadish, Saikumar, Harisree Ashokan, and Indrans.

Rekhachithram hit theaters on January 9, 2025, and reportedly raked in about Rs 55.17 crore globally, according to Sacnilk. This mystery thriller has quickly become the first blockbuster of the year in Malayalam cinema.
