Listicle: 10 sequels we’ve been waiting for since forever

Crazy Rich Asians 2. The OG came out in 2018. Asians have got crazier and richer since. And we’ve watched the movie so often, we now know the words to Coldplay’s Yellow in Mandarin Chinese. The plan was to shoot two sequels back-to-back in 2020 but a little virus got in the way. What’s taking so long? The source material, Kevin Kwan’s bestselling trilogy, is already there. Filming begins next year. Jon M Chu will return to direct. Phew!
Jab We Met 2. Justice for Anshuman. Did Geet’s annoying boyfriend ever make it out of the ganne ka khet? We need to know his side of the story. He was overshadowed by Kareena and Shahid in the first film and deserves to have his moment. Imtiaz Ali neither confirms nor denies that he’d make a sequel, so there’s still hope. BTW, actor Tarun Arora who played Anshuman, looks so much sexier now. Maybe Jab We Met but 50-Shades-of-Grey-style?
The Princess and the Frog. Disney’s story, set in 1920s New Orleans, almost tripled its $100 million budget. Tiana’s Bayou Adventure is a crowd-puller at Disneyland. So, why wouldn’t they make a sequel to the 2009 movie? We’ve put up with The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride and Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea. We deserve this. We’ll even take a live action at this point. (Someone please DM Zendaya).
Lady Gaga and Beyonce’s Telephone. Some songs need sequels, not encores. This 2009 collab had easy lyrics, catchy beats and, two of this generation’s most iconic voices. At the end of the video, it clearly said, ‘To Be Continued’. When, Miss Gaga? What’s the hold-up, Miss Beyonce? And what might they sing about? A Harley Quinn-Cowboy Carter mashup?
Princess Diaries 3. The first movie was in 2001, the second in 2004. Anne Hathaway, the princess in question, is now playing the older woman in schmaltzy May-December romcoms. Disney signed on for the third instalment in 2022 and went quiet after that. Julie Andrews is 88. One simply does not keep the Queen of Genovia waiting. Less pear juggling, more movie making.
Udaan 2. Udaan (2010), was one of the best coming-of-age films of its time. Rajat Barmecha played a teen boy who rebels against his alcoholic, abusive father, played by Ronit Roy. We know, we know. They left the ending a little ambiguous, but that’s precisely why we’re hungry for a sequel. Since 2017, there have been rumours. Vikramaditya Motwane has worked on Sacred Games in the interim. It’s almost within reach.
The Old Guard 2. Charlize Theron truly kicked ass in the OG movie (2020). Shooting for the sequel wrapped up two years ago. Apparently, the delay is due to leadership changes at Netflix and other “post-production” issues. Netflix already scrapped Halle Berry’s sci-fi movie The Mothership, over post-production delays. It would be criminal to not get a sequel to one of the best action movies in recent times.
Something Blue. Yes, the sequel to 2011’s Something Borrowed, with John Krasinski, Ginnifer Goodwin, and Kate Hudson. Based on the book by Emily Giffin, it didn’t do too well at the box office. But on streaming it’s found an afterlife of its own. The film had a mid-credits scene AND a to-be-continued feel. In 2014, Giffin confirmed that she had written the script for a sequel. Any day now…
Frozen 3. Wait until November 2027. Why is it somehow worse knowing the exact date? Filmmaker Jennifer Lee has stepped down as Disney Animation’s chief creative officer just to direct the next two Frozen movies. At Disney’s recent D23 event, Lee teased that the stories would explore the origin of Elsa’s powers. Oh, and we’re probably going to find out what happened to Hans.
Dirty Dancing 2. First off, Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights doesn’t count and is best forgotten. At CinemaCon in 2022, Lionsgate confirmed that a direct sequel to everyone’s (and their mother’s) favourite 1987 film was coming. Jennifer Grey is confirmed to return. The movie was supposed to be released in February 2024. Let’s do Patrick Swayze’s memory justice.
