The ball is finally rolling in favor of the DCU as James Gunn and Peter Safran are working in full swing to overcome their dramatic entry into the franchise and push forward with movies that continue the story. Chapter One: Gods and Monsters looks impressive, featuring not only great film concepts but also promising shows. With Superman having wrapped up production and James Gunn now focused on Peacemaker Season 2, several other projects are progressing at various stages of development. One that’s generating a lot of buzz is the series Lanterns, based on Green Lantern. The show, which focuses on a more mature Green Lantern, is one of the most anticipated DCU projects. Recently, Josh Brolin was offered the role, creating quite a stir online. However, there’s now an update on that front.
More Actors Considered After Josh Brolin Exits
For those unaware, Josh Brolin, known for his role as Thanos in the MCU, was offered the role of Green Lantern in the HBO Max series Lanterns, which is also expected to stream on Jio Cinema in India. However, something about the project didn’t sit well with Brolin, leading him to decline the role, leaving the door open for another actor to step in. With fans eagerly awaiting news on who will take on the part, reports suggest that the studio already has two actors in mind.
According to a scoop from The Streamr on X (formerly Twitter), DCU executives have shortlisted multiple actors for the Green Lantern role in Lanterns. Two notable names are Matthew McConaughey and Ewan McGregor. Both stars, in their fifties, fit the character's description and the tone of the show. Now that Josh Brolin has passed on the role of Hal Jordan, it’s likely that the studio will approach one of these two actors. While no official confirmation has been made, the possibility of either McConaughey or McGregor stepping into the role is certainly plausible.
About Lanterns
The series, developed under the leadership of James Gunn and Peter Safran, will follow Hal Jordan and John Stewart, both members of the Green Lantern Corps. This intergalactic team is equipped with rings that grant them superhuman powers to defend specific realms of the cosmos. The plot of Lanterns centers on Stewart, a new recruit who teams up with the veteran Jordan to investigate a murder in the American heartland.
Chris Mundy, known for his work on Ozark and True Detective, has been hired as the showrunner and will also serve as an executive producer alongside Damon Lindelof and Tom King. Lanterns will consist of eight episodes and will be part of the HBO Originals lineup according to the latest plans.
