L2 Empuraan global box office earnings on day four: The third directorial venture of actor-director Prithviraj Sukumaran, L2 Empuraan, premiered in theaters last Thursday. Featuring performances by Mohanlal, Tovino Thomas, and Manju Warrier, the film amassed ₹174 crore worldwide by the end of its opening weekend, as reported by Sacnilk. However, did it surpass the weekend debut of Vicky Kaushal's Chhaava?
L2 Empuraan weekend opening beats Chhaava?
This year's most prominent film is Laxman Utekar’s Hindi production, Chhaava, featuring Vicky, Rashmika Mandanna, and Akshaye Khanna in leading roles. As reported by a trade website, the film has garnered ₹796.75 crore globally within 44 days of its release. It had an exceptional debut, amassing ₹164.75 crore worldwide during its opening weekend. Chhaava premiered on Friday, February 14.
In contrast, L2 Empuraan was launched in theaters on Thursday, March 27. The film earned ₹138 crore globally in its first three days and surpassed ₹174 crore by the fourth day. Thus, L2 Empuraan technically outperformed Chhaava's opening figures, benefiting from an additional day of screening compared to the film inspired by the life of Sambhaji Maharaj. Notably, Chhaava exceeded the ₹195 crore threshold by its fourth day, despite it being a weekday.
The earnings of L2 Empuraan are remarkable, especially as it stands as the largest Malayalam film produced this year. It has already surpassed the box office collections of Rekhachitram and Officer on Duty. The sequel to Lucifer was released in multiple languages, including Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi.
Controversy surrounding L2 Empuraan
Following the release of L2 Empuraan, the film's team faced criticism for its depiction of the 2002 Gujarat riots. In response, Mohanlal has apologized and committed to removing the scenes that offended. Mallika Sukumaran, Prithviraj’s mother, defended him amid speculation that Mohanlal had not viewed the final cut of the film, suggesting that the responsibility lay entirely with Prithviraj. Despite the surrounding controversy, the film maintained its performance on Monday, and its future success remains uncertain.
