L2: Empuraan box office collection on its opening day: Mohanlal has set a new benchmark in Malayalam cinema with the remarkable box office performance of his latest film, L2: Empuraan, achieving an unprecedented ₹21 crore on its first day in India. This figure more than doubles the previous record for any Malayalam film.
L2 Empuraan box office collection day 1
According to trade tracker Sacnilk, L2: Empuraan amassed a net collection of ₹21 crore in India on its opening day, surpassing all prior records. The previous record was held by a film featuring Prithviraj Sukumaran, whose 2024 release, The Goat Life, debuted with a net collection of ₹8.95 crore in India. Before that, Lucifer had opened with ₹6.10 crore in 2019. Sacnilk also noted that Empuraan experienced a robust 60% occupancy across all Malayalam screenings, with key areas such as Kochi and Kozhikode—strongholds for Mohanlal—exceeding 90% occupancy, resulting in nearly all shows being sold out.
L2: Empuraan is poised to establish new records in box office earnings for Malayalam cinema, an industry recognized for its storytelling but not as much for its financial success. Until 2019, no Malayalam film had grossed ₹100 crore globally, a milestone achieved by Lucifer. Currently, only one film, Manjummel Boys, has surpassed ₹200 crore. Empuraan appears ready to change this narrative, especially with the extended weekend providing an excellent opportunity for further success.
As a mass action film, it is possible that day two collections may experience a significant decline. However, if positive word of mouth continues, the Mohanlal-led film is likely to break additional records in the coming days and weeks.
All about L2: Empuraan
L2: Empuraan is the second instalment in a planned trilogy and follows the success of Lucifer (2019). The second part of the film delves into a socio-political drama, with Mohanlal's character at the centre. Apart from Mohanlal, the film also stars Prithviraj, Tovino Thomas, Abhimanyu Singh, Indrajith Sukumaran, and Manju Warrier, among others. Apart from Malayalam, the film has also been released in Hindi, Tamil, Kannada, and Telugu.
