Actor-director Prithviraj Sukumaran's latest Malayalam film, L2 Empuraan, featuring Mohanlal, encountered controversy following its release on March 27. The film included references to the 2002 Gujarat riots, which were not well received by certain audience members. As a result, 24 edits were made, resulting in the removal of 2 minutes and 8 seconds of footage. Here is an overview of the modifications.

A trade analyst shared the list of 24 modifications and cuts sanctioned by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), along with the new certification obtained by the producers of L2 Empuraan post-edits. The list indicates that thank you cards referencing actor-politician Suresh Gopi and Additional Commissioner of Income Tax Jyothi Mohan IRS were eliminated and replaced with alternative thank you cards.

A card that specified a particular timeframe was altered to read "a few years ago," and scenes showing vehicles passing in front of a religious site were excised. Dialogues between Masood (Satyajit Sharma) and Zayed Masood (Prithviraj), as well as between Balraj (Abhimanyu Singh) and Munna (Sukant Goel), were rearranged. Additional scenes featuring Balraj were cut, and the name he later uses in the film, Bhajarangi, was changed to Baldev.

Visuals illustrating violence against women were removed, along with a name board on a vehicle, images of TV news, and a religious structure.

About the controversy

Following the emergence of the controversy, Mohanlal released a statement of apology. Mallika also defended her son, Prithviraj, in response to claims that Mohanlal had not been informed about the contentious scenes in the film. Producer Antony Perumbavoor of Aashirvad Cinemas addressed the media in Kochi, as reported by PTI, and confirmed that they would be editing the film. However, he refuted any suggestions that this decision was influenced by 'pressure or threats.'
