The second instalment in the Lucifer trilogy, L2 Empuraan, the 2025 Malayalam film debuted in theatres a week ago. The film, starring Mohanlal in the lead role, has minted Rs 83.75 crore at the box office in domestic network, as per reports. This includes all languages.

Mohanlal reprised his role as the lead character in the second installment of the Lucifer trilogy, titled L2 Empuraan. This action thriller, directed by actor and filmmaker Prithviraj in his third directorial venture, also features him in a starring role. The screenplay for L2 Empuraan was written by Murali Gopi.
The film was released in theaters a week ago and has garnered Rs 83.75 crore across all languages at the domestic box office, according to a report by Sacnilk. Taking advantage of the extended Eid weekend, L2 Empuraan has primarily earned from its Malayalam version. However, there has been a decline in revenue since Tuesday. Despite this, L2 Empuraan remains the highest-grossing Malayalam film of 2025, surpassing crime thrillers Officer on Duty and Rekhachitram.
Since its debut, L2 Empuraan has faced controversy, particularly from certain right-wing groups who criticized the film for its alleged portrayal of the 2002 Gujarat riots. In response, the filmmakers implemented "voluntary modifications" to the movie. These adjustments included the removal of BJP leader Suresh Gopi's name from the credits, muting the term NIA, and eliminating visuals of vehicles passing by religious sites, along with the removal of a religious structure. In total, the filmmakers made 24 changes to the film.
No IMAX screenings for L2 Empuraan anymore
Empuraan was initially announced as the first Malayalam film set to be released in IMAX. However, this plan has now been halted due to the need for a re-edited version, which will prevent the IMAX screenings from taking place. The necessary cuts and modifications have resulted in significant costs associated with re-uploading the film in the IMAX format.
As a sequel to Lucifer, which can be streamed on SonyLiv and OTTplay Premium at promotional rates, Empuraan boasts a stellar cast that includes Prithviraj Sukumaran, Manju Warrier, Tovino Thomas, Indrajith Sukumaran, Pranav Mohanlal, among others.
