L2 Empuraan, the newly launched Malayalam action thriller featuring Mohanlal in the principal role, has encountered some controversy, prompting the production team to consider alterations to the film. Nevertheless, it continues to perform well at the box office. Within just five days, the film has achieved a global box office revenue of Rs 200 crore, with Rs 68 crore generated in India across all languages.

Actor Mohanlal has collaborated once more with director Prithviraj Sukumaran for the second installment of the Lucifer trilogy. The film premiered in theaters on March 27 and received a range of reviews upon its debut. Nevertheless, it has maintained a consistent performance at the box office, achieving the remarkable milestone of earning Rs 200 crore globally within just five days.

According to a report by Sacnilk, the film Empuraan has achieved a domestic box office collection of Rs 68 crore across all languages. It has emerged as the highest-grossing Malayalam film of 2025, surpassing both Rekhachithram and Officer On Duty. The extended Eid weekend has significantly contributed to the commercial success of this Mohanlal-starring film.
Additionally, it is noteworthy that Empuraan has set a record as the fastest Malayalam film to reach a global gross of Rs 100 crore, outpacing Manjummel Boys, which grossed Rs 73.5 crore. Within just three days, Empuraan has already amassed Rs 140 crore, making it the highest-grossing Malayalam film ever outside of India.

Empuraan continues to thrive despite facing controversy. Following its release, right-wing groups highlighted scenes in the film that depicted the Gujarat riots. Caught in a political uproar, the creators of Empuraan made 17 alterations to the film, with a revised version set to be released soon. Mohanlal has also issued an apology regarding the matter.
The film features a cast that includes Mohanlal, Prithviraj Sukumaran, Manju Warrier, Tovino Thomas, and Suraj Venjaramoodu, among others, and is penned by Murali Gopi. It is produced collaboratively by Antony Perumbavoor, Subaskaran Allirajah, and Gokulam Gopalan under the banners of Aashirvad Cinemas, Lyca Productions, and Sree Gokulam Movies.
