The eagerly awaited historical courtroom drama, Kesari Chapter 2: The Untold Story of Jallianwala Bagh, is set to premiere in theaters on April 18, 2025. It has been announced that the film's OTT partner will be JioHotstar, where it will be available for streaming following its theatrical release.

Kesari Chapter 2 plot and historical context

In this film directed by Karan Singh Tyagi, Akshay Kumar portrays C. Sankaran Nair, a prominent politician and lawyer associated with the Indian National Congress. Nair gained recognition for his courageous legal battle against the British Raj, seeking to uncover the truth behind the 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre, which is also depicted in The Waking of a Nation. The narrative delves into Nair's relentless pursuit of justice during a pivotal moment in India's struggle for independence.

R. Madhavan and Ananya Panday share the screen with Kumar. Panday takes on the role of the young attorney Dilreet Gill, whereas Madhavan plays Advocate Neville McKinley. Regina Cassandra, known for her work in Rocket Boys, portrays Nair's supportive wife, Palat Kunhimalu Amma. The ensemble cast also includes General Reginald Dyer, played by Simon Paisley Day, and Judge McArdie, portrayed by Steven Hartley.

Title evolution

Dharma Productions, Cape of Good Films, and Leo Media Collective are collaborating on this project. Initially titled Shankara, the film was renamed Kesari Chapter 2 in February 2025 to thematically link it to the 2019 film Kesari, which also starred Akshay Kumar. Although the two films do not share a common storyline, they both highlight significant events in India's struggle against colonial rule.

The trailer reveals the film's emotional intensity and dramatic courtroom confrontations. Nair's determination to challenge the British government and the gravity of the Jallianwala Bagh tragedy have captured the audience's interest.

Akshay Kumar's connection

The project holds particular significance for Akshay Kumar, as his father was born near Jallianwala Bagh, and their family history encompasses narratives of the tragedy. "We created this film out of a sense of anger, inspired by the stories I heard about that event," he emphasized, highlighting the importance of bringing attention to such historical tragedies.
