On its opening day, Friday, the historical drama Kesari: Chapter 2, featuring Akshay Kumar, earned a net total of Rs 7.5 crore in India. Although it received positive initial reviews, boasted a prominent cast, and generated significant excitement, the film experienced a relatively subdued debut at the box office.
Kesari: Chapter 2 earns less than Sky Force
Karan Singh Tyagi's film delves into the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, a tragic incident in India's colonial past, through the lens of Sir C. Sankaran Nair's legal battle. Despite the significant anticipation surrounding its patriotic theme and emotional depth, Kesari: Chapter 2 did not surpass the performance of Akshay Kumar's earlier patriotic film, Sky Force, which opened with a nett collection of Rs 12.25 crore.
Kesari (2019), which portrayed the Battle of Saragarhi and earned Rs 21 crore nett at the box office, was produced by Dharma Productions, led by Karan Johar. This new film acts as a spiritual successor to Kesari. Despite a modest opening, industry insiders remain hopeful. The film may experience steady growth over the weekend, bolstered by positive word of mouth on social media and a wave of favorable reviews from critics.
Storyline and cast of Kesari: Chapter 2
Featuring Ananya Panday and R. Madhavan play pivotal roles in Kesari: Chapter 2, which narrates the story of Sir C. Sankaran Nair, a valiant lawyer who challenged the British Empire in the aftermath of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre on April 13, 1919. During a peaceful Baisakhi festival, which also acted as a protest against the Rowlatt Act, General Reginald Dyer commanded the massacre of thousands of unarmed individuals. By initiating a groundbreaking legal battle against Dyer and the Crown, Nair not only astonished the colonial authorities but also highlighted the atrocities committed by the British to the global audience.
Combining an engaging courtroom narrative with a strong sense of national pride, Kesari: Chapter 2 is poised to achieve blockbuster status. The film's success over the weekend will reveal if it can match or exceed the total earnings of Akshay Kumar's earlier patriotic films, including Rustom and Holiday: A Soldier Is Never Off Duty, among others.
