Kanguva is Suriya's most prestigious film to date and hit the screens on November 14, 2024. Although the reviews have been mixed, the period drama has had a solid start on its opening day worldwide. In Telugu states, Kanguva earned Rs 5.1 crore on its first day, which is a commendable figure and highlights Suriya’s strong fan following.
Kanguva's day one box office collections in Telugu are here
Kanguva was released alongside another popular Telugu film, Matka, starring Varun Tej. Since Matka also failed to gain traction at the box office, Kanguva benefited from some evening show occupancy in A-centers. However, the reviews and word-of-mouth response in Telugu states have been underwhelming, posing a significant challenge for the film’s performance in the coming days.
In Tamil Nadu, Kanguva also had a strong opening, but the word-of-mouth response there has been even worse than in Telugu states. Given the film’s massive scale, its pre-release business was impressive. The Siva-directed film needs to earn at least Rs 25 crore to break even. While it has started well, the negative talk could severely impact its run in the long term.
Fortunately for the film, Suriya enjoys immense popularity among the masses, who seem to appreciate the film’s loud narration and grand scale. However, DSP’s music and background score have faced heavy criticism online.
Produced by Gnanavel Raja on a massive budget, Kanguva features Bobby Deol and Disha Patani in key roles. As the weekend progresses, the film might see some more traction in Telugu states. However, sustaining audience interest during the weekdays will likely be a challenge.
While Suriya delivers a stellar performance, the film suffers from director Siva’s weak narration, which has been a major letdown. Despite this, the makers have announced plans for Kanguva 2, though it remains to be seen whether this sequel will materialize. For now, Kanguva has made a strong start in Telugu states. Stay tuned for more updates.
