Kangana Ranaut’s upcoming release Emergency has been the talk of the town for a while now. It seems the movie is likely to face difficulties in the upcoming days. Amid the ongoing backlash after Kangana’s controversial statements regarding rape and famer protests, some Sikh groups have now urged state authorities to put a ban on the movie in Telangana. The vital decision to embargo the release of Emergency comes after a delegation of 18 members of the Sikh Society in Telangana shared their concerns about targeting them with the government adviser Mohammad Ali Shabbir, followed by a nod by CM A Revanth Reddy.
Emergency and the Sikh community row
Kangana Ranaut’s directorial debut, Emergency, has sparked outrage among various Sikh groups. Ahead of its release on September 6, the movie has attracted unwanted attention from the minority community for hurting their sentiments with a wrong image. For the unversed, many Sikhs expressed strong dislike for Emergency as it allegedly depicts them as terrorists and anti-nationals.
A group of Sikh community leaders requested the Telangana government officials, including adviser Mohammad Ali Shabbir, to impose a ban on Kangana Ranaut’s upcoming movie Emergency. On Thursday, the members were assured that their request would be considered, and the CM is looking into the matter. However, a final decision will be taken after a series of legal procedures and advice. The delegation team lashed out at the makers for its ‘offensive’ narrative and submitted their requests for the ban in a report while citing concerns for their community’s image.
Meanwhile, the Shiromani Akali Dal’s Delhi unit also requested the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to put a ban on the release of Emergency. They allegedly accused the film of inciting communal tension by spreading misinformation.
This outrage and backlash come after the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and the Akhal Takht’s demands on the immediate ban for the same. They seek the government authorities to take action against the film for trying to “character assassinate” Sikhs. In a press conference, SGPC chief Harjinder Singh Dhami expressed his concern over the matter and revealed to seek an FIR against Ranaut and her film.
