Kangana Ranaut fans can finally breathe a sigh of relief because the wait is over! Her upcoming film, Emergency, which she not only directs but also stars in, is set to hit theaters. This film has been making waves for over a year, and after a few delays—most recently due to certification issues with the Central Board of Film Certification—it's finally ready for its big screen debut on January 17, 2025. Plus, we've got the scoop on where it will stream after its theatrical run wraps up.

Crisis on OTT

Emergency is a film that dives into a significant chapter of Indian politics, focusing on the controversial Emergency period. Kangana Ranaut takes on the role of Indira Gandhi, the former Prime Minister. The story covers the timeline from the announcement of the Emergency to its eventual lifting, which ultimately led to Gandhi's assassination. Directed by Kangana, the cast includes Shreyas Talpade, Mahima Choudhary, Anupam Kher, and more in key roles.

Good news for those who miss it in theaters: the film is set to stream on Netflix after its run in cinemas. If you have a subscription, you can catch it without any extra fees. However, the exact release date for streaming hasn’t been revealed yet.

Emergency vs CBFC

Emergency has been in the spotlight lately due to some controversies, with Sikh organizations and others calling for a ban on the film. After a heated discussion, it was announced yesterday that Kangana and her crew are going to make the cuts recommended by the Revising Committee. However, a new report suggests that Ranaut and her team aren’t thrilled about it, but they’re going along with it for the sake of their film.

A source close to the situation told Mid-Day, “Even though the team isn’t happy about the cuts, they’ve decided to comply with the CBFC’s requests to ensure Emergency gets released on schedule. They believe that the film still conveys an important narrative about a crucial part of our political history, even with the edits.”

The source also mentioned that Kangana Ranaut is committed to the film’s success, and if that means making some compromises with the CBFC, she’s okay with it. “The creators are focused on preserving the essential elements. Despite the hurdles, they’re eager to present Emergency to the audience so they can grasp the importance of democracy,” the source added. Ultimately, the team had to accept the conditions and received the go-ahead.
