After multiple date changes, Kangana Ranaut’s Emergency was supposed to finally hit the theatres on September 6, 2024. However, amid the growing controversies, the biographical political drama has been postponed. The film marks the directorial debut of Kangana.
Emergency postponed
Kangana Ranaut’s Emergency has been around controversies. And days after the actor and Mandi Lok Sabha MP claimed that the film’s clearance was “stopped” because members of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) received “threats,” the release date has now been postponed.
The film’s new release date has not yet been announced by the makers.
In a video posted on X (formerly Twitter), Kangana, had said on Friday, “There are rumours doing the rounds that our film, Emergency, has been granted Censor certificate. This is not true. In fact, our film had been cleared but certification has been stopped because many threats were coming in. Death threats. The Censor Board members are getting threats. We are under pressure not to show the assassination of Indira Gandhi, not to show Bhindranwale, not to show the Punjab riots. I don’t know what will be left to show then… This is unbelievable for me and I am very sorry for the state of things in this country.”
For the uninitiated, Emergency was earlier scheduled to release in November 2023, however, the film was then postponed to June 2024 and then the recent release date was September 6.
The film is a biographical political drama revolving around the 21-month period from 1975 to 1977 when the late Prime Minister of India Indira Gandhi imposed a state of emergency across India. Kangana Ranaut stars as Indira Gandhi in the film which also marks her solo directorial debut. The film also features Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Vishak Nair, Mahima Chaudhry, Milind Soman, and Satish Kaushik in pivotal roles.
