Kangana Ranaut has been quite vocal about Emergency, her upcoming film based on the tenure of former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Not only does she portray the late PM in the film, but she has also directed it and is credited with the story. Initially set for release on September 6, 2024, the film was indefinitely postponed due to issues with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The makers were directed to remove certain contentious scenes, and numerous FIRs were filed, along with calls for the movie to be banned. Kangana has now reacted to the ongoing controversy, expressing that the delay has led to financial losses for her and the team involved, and she feels embarrassed by the situation.

Kangana Ranaut on the Delay of Emergency

For those unfamiliar, Emergency first made headlines when Sikh groups raised concerns about the film's portrayal of their community. Central to the debate was the depiction of Bhindranwale, a controversial figure who played a pivotal role during the period depicted in the film. Kangana Ranaut has now responded to the controversy. Read on for more details.

According to News 18, Kangana commented on the row, saying, “It is our history, which has been intentionally hidden. We are not told about this. This is not an age for good people. My film is ready to be released. It has received certification from the censor board. Four historians supervised the making of our film. We have the proper documentation. There is nothing wrong with my film. But some people call Bhindranwale a saint, a revolutionary, or a leader. They threatened us with pleas (to ban the film). I have also received threats. Previous governments have declared Khalistanis as terrorists. He was not a saint who was sitting in a temple with an AK-47.”

Kangana Ranaut on Financial Losses

Kangana further stated that only a small group of people have objections to Emergency, and they are the ones inciting others and turning this into a larger issue. She believes that 99% of people in Punjab do not consider Bhindranwale a saint. Referring to him as a terrorist, she insists that if he is recognized as such, her movie should be allowed to release.

She then revealed how the postponement of Emergency is causing her financial losses. “How long will we continue to play it safe? I never thought people would object to Bhindranwale being shown as a terrorist. I am being tortured. It’s so embarrassing for me. We also faced losses. My movie was canceled just four days ago,” she said.

Emergency has yet to receive a new release date. Stay tuned to OTTplay for more information on this and everything else from the world of streaming and films.
